Brief Biography

Hugh was born in Dun Laoghaire and after a number of years working and studying in London lives again in the borough.

In parallel to working in public service in London Hugh honed his making skills through courses at the Chelsea College of Art workshops and the London College of Furniture.  He fed his fascination for how things are made in museums, galleries and design schools - the Victoria and Albert Museum and the John Makepeace school in Parnham were particularly influential.

Hugh’s designs have clean, flowing lines involving innovative construction processes that consistently challenge the range of possibilities of his materials. Woods that Hugh works with, such as Beech and Walnut, allow him to push the boundaries within which traditional wood working techniques were previously contained.

Hugh expresses his creativity through a wide range of objects including finely finished functional boxes/cases, stylish uplighters that provide soft atmospheric light, delicate decorative platters and sculptural pieces.

Hugh is a member of the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland, the Dun Laoghaire Artists Network and in 2014 joined the group of artists represented in Dublin by the Cornet Gallery, 3 Great Denmark Street.
